Troubleshooting & FAQ

My VM has no internet

Work through these checks inside the VM:

CheckCommandExpected
Correct IP?ip a10.10.10.X/24 on the network interface
Gateway reachable?ping -c 3 10.10.10.1Replies
Internet reachable?ping -c 3 1.1.1.1Replies
DNS works?ping -c 3 debian.orgReplies
  • No IP / wrong IP: fix the network settings, see Creating a VM.

  • Gateway doesn't reply: check the VM's Hardware → Network Device uses bridge vmbr1. Also check no other VM uses the same IP.

  • Gateway works, internet doesn't: check NAT on the host:

    cd /root
    iptables -t nat -S POSTROUTING | grep 10.10.10
    sysctl net.ipv4.ip_forward

You should see a MASQUERADE rule and net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1. If not, run ifreload -a from /etc/network or reboot the host.

  • IPs work, names don't: set DNS servers 1.1.1.1 / 8.8.8.8 inside the VM.

My port forward doesn't work

  1. Is the service running in the VM? From the host:

    cd /root
    nc -zv 10.10.10.20 22

If this fails, the problem is inside the VM (service stopped, or the VM's own firewall, e.g. ufw or Windows Firewall).

  2. Is the rule active?

    cd /root
    iptables -t nat -L PREROUTING -n -v --line-numbers

If it's missing, check the post-up line in /etc/network/interfaces for typos, then run ifreload -a from /etc/network.

  3. Are you testing from outside? Test from a different network (e.g. a phone on mobile data). Some routers can't connect to their own forwarded ports.

  4. Is the Proxmox firewall enabled on the VM? If yes, allow the port in VM → Firewall.

  5. Using OPNsense? Host forwards and OPNsense forwards conflict. Use only one method.

I can't reach the Proxmox web interface

  • Use https:// and port 8006: https://YOUR-PUBLIC-IP:8006
  • If you enabled the Proxmox firewall, check that your current IP is in the management IPSet.
  • If you changed vmbr0 or the host is unreachable entirely, open a support ticket. We can access your server via the out-of-band console.

The network GUI shows "Pending changes"

Somebody edited the network in the GUI without applying. Click Revert unless you know exactly what changed. Never apply changes to vmbr0 without being sure.

FAQ

Can I give a VM its own public IP?

Yes, with additional IPs ordered from us. We route them to your server and provide setup instructions. Please don't configure public IPs yourself, see Network Rules.

Can I use IPv6?

Contact support to request an IPv6 allocation for your server.

Can I run containers (LXC)?

Yes. Use Create CT, select storage local-lvm, and on the Network tab select bridge vmbr1 with a static IP 10.10.10.X/24, gateway 10.10.10.1. Download container templates under local → CT Templates → Templates.

How do I send email from my VMs?

Outbound email on port 25 from a shared IP often lands in spam. For reliable delivery, use an SMTP relay service (port 587) with your own domain and SPF/DKIM records.

Can I change the private network 10.10.10.0/24?

You can, but it's rarely worth it. If you need a separate network, add another private bridge or an SDN network (see Automatic IPs with DHCP) instead.

How much space do my VMs have?

Check local-lvm in the left tree. The system and ISOs use local, while VM disks use local-lvm. LVM-thin allocates space as it's written, so keep an eye on usage and don't overcommit beyond what the disk can hold.

Something else?

Open a support ticket in the client area and include your server's hostname, the VM ID, and what you've already tried.
